Toes

 In

The toes are made up of three bones: the proximal phalanx, closest to the foot, at the beginning of the toe (connected via the metatarsophalangeal joint to the metatarsals); the intermediate phalanges in the center of the finger; and the distal, which is the fingertip, all joined together by the interphalangeal joint, except for the thumb, which does not have an intermediate phalanx. Their main functions are related to foot support and balance during the most varied activities, such as walking, jumping, and running.

This area is prone to pain caused by trauma or injuries because it is relatively sensitive and exposed. Finger deformities are the leading cause of pain and discomfort in the toes. Still, other diagnoses may also be related to fingering pain, such as arthrosis, ingrown toenails, and calluses.

CAUSES

Most causes of finger pain are related to deformities, especially when people have hammer or claw fingers. According to the “Brazilian Feet” survey, approximately 11.4% of Brazilians present this type of alteration in their fingers.

Ingrown toenails and finger pain

Poorly cut nails, trauma to the fingers, and genetic predisposition are some of the factors that can influence ingrown toenails to appear. This type of nail problem can cause severe pain in the fingers, affecting the individual’s well-being as it contributes to inflammations and infections, making daily activities challenging.

Inadequate footwear

The prolonged use of inadequate slippers and sandals can cause finger pain. The risk is further increased if the subject wears stiff or narrow-toed shoes too often. These shoes press and squeeze the toes, causing calluses or deformities.

MAIN PATHOLOGIES THAT CAUSE PAIN IN THE FINGERS

Arthrosis

Arthrosis is a degenerative and progressive pathology that wears away the cartilage of the joints between the bones. It can affect the fingers, causing stiffness and well-localized pain.

Claw and hammer deformities

These toe changes are caused by muscle retraction and shortening in this area, affecting toe position during gait. It is common for people with claw or hammer toes to feel pain due to overload. The origin of these deformities is usually associated with using inadequate footwear.

Calluses

Even if they do not cause pain, calluses can cause severe discomfort since the skin thickens due to the fingers’ friction with the shoes (intensified when the shoe is rigid and tight).

Morton’s neuroma

This pathology causes the thickening of a nerve that passes between the metatarsals and can cause pain, loss of sensitivity, tingling, redness, and inflammation, especially between the third and fourth toes. According to the “Morton’s neuroma” study, the main factors that cause Morton’s neuroma are related to high pressure exerted on the forefoot.

Bunionette

It is a bunion that affects the “little” toe, deviating it toward the other toes. They arise with the continuous application of pressure on the side of the foot, causing the toes to overlap.

PREVENTION AND TREATMENT

For each case of pain, there is a different type of treatment. The diagnosis to evaluate the best ways to alleviate the discomfort should be made by a specialized doctor and, in some cases, only after the image. However, some measures can be taken to relieve pain, such as:

– Decreased load of physical exercise;

– Wear comfortable shoes and reduce the use of shoes with a thin v-neck or high heels;

– Use insoles and shoes to measure Painless Feet.

FEET WITHOUT PAIN® ORTHOPEDIC INSOLES AND CUSTOM SHOES FOR TOE PAIN

 Using custom-made Feet Without Pain insoles improves the alignment of the fingers and contributes to a correct pressure distribution on the feet. To do this, an elevation and a shock absorber are placed under the metatarsals, reducing overload and better distributing the load on the fingers.

The bespoke shoe will provide the perfect space for your toes. This way, you can choose the type of shoes you like and still have room for your fingers, avoiding calluses, blisters, claw or hammer toes, and overlapping toes. Feet Without Pain custom-made shoes are made with the exact mold of each foot, considering all curves and measurements.
